‘Unique Mother Tongue’ is a new series of Private International Poetry-Arts events to be held periodically in London. It was created to further develop the ideas of the successful private international poetry festival: ‘SAILORS HOME’, which first took place in October 2005. Each event will center on a specific subject and structure that seeks to create and explore exchanges between artists, privately and professionally.

The title of the series, UNIQUE MOTHER TONGUE, comes from a beautiful sentence: ‘Poetry is our unique mother tongue’. This in itself suggests some important elements:

1)      Poetry is our real meeting place. It represents a certain common ‘depth’ within every language and culture. It is the principal reason that we understand each other.

2)      We have to create ourselves to reach the level of Unique Mother Tongue. Nothing but the quality of our work can prove that we are qualified for the meeting.

3)      Forms of exchange between artists must suit the inherent nature of their art. Deeply and beautifully, privately and professionally, the event must itself be a piece of art.

The format of each event will be designed separately, but each must involve the following two parts: representation and discussion. All guests are privately invited and the events will be closed to the general public. However, the results of each event  will be published on our website http://www.uniquemothertongue.com/ and can therefore be shared with everyone.
